Welcome to Insights E-Newsletter

Welcome to the new Insights!

May 6, 2016

According to Merriam-Webster, insight is "the ability to understand people and situations in a very clear way." The Insights E-News is a new medium to share this understanding of our organization.

Some of the more veteran OLLI members remember that the Course Guide was named Insights. In addition to the list of courses there were articles about our members, the course leaders, committees at work, and other items of interest to the OLLI membership. These articles have been missed and I am very pleased to inform you that they are back and in a modern and highly accessible format - a website or "blog" with all of the Insights E-News articles easily arranged and organized.

This is not a replacement for the Course Guide. You will continue to receive the Guide in its current format on a quarterly basis. The Insights E-News does not replace the Memo-to-Members which will continue to highlight and inform you of plans and decisions of the OLLI Board of Directors. The Insights E-News certainly does not replace the Up-to-Dater. That will continue to inform you of timely items such as course changes and other time sensitive information. In fact, it is the Up-To-Dater that will be used to inform you about new articles posted in the Insights E-News.

The new Insights E-News blog format offers many advantages over the older paper format. First, the articles can be posted as they are completed rather than waiting until a number of articles are completed. Articles are not constrained by the same length restrictions that a print format requires. We can use whatever length is appropriate for the article. Photos can also be color without an extra charge in the print process. In fact, except for articles mailed to the few homes of OLLI members who do not use email, Insights E-News will be completely free to publish!

If you ever threw away or misplaced your copy of the old Insights and then later wanted to look at an article, you know it was frustrating. Maybe you wanted to re-read a story about a course leader because you might want to take a class from them. Maybe you wanted to read about a course that is being offered once again and had a review in Insights. Now the new Insights E-News articles are going to be available to go back and re-read.

Think of Insights E-News as timeless. The articles will have lasting value and be relevant and interesting to the OLLI membership. You can expect to see articles about a course leader, a new or long time OLLI member, one of our staff members, more in-depth information about a specific course, OLLI committee or special OLLI event.

Where will the articles come from? The Editorial Board (see below) will solicit articles from the committees, course leaders, members and the Executive Director. We have a pipeline full of articles, so we need not go far. The Editorial Board also will play a role in reviewing each article. In fact, it is a high value of the Editorial Board that Insights E-News maintain high standards for content and style. Anyone invited to submit an article can expect that it will be edited. While members may submit a proposal for an article, unsolicited articles may not be accepted. It is also pertinent to note here that Insights E-News will not publish "letters to the editor" type articles.

We have found a format that is very responsive, simple and flexible and you will be able to read articles on a web browser on your computer, a tablet, or even on your smartphone. Don't "do" email? The office will, as always, mail you a copy.

We do know that members have missed the articles from the former Insights course guide. We are excited about this launch of the new Insights E-News and hope that you will enjoy the articles in this new format.

Best,
Alan Wyman, Communications Committee Chair

Insights E-News Editorial Board members:
Emily Shapiro, OLLI Board member
Sylvia Johnson, OLLI Board member
